I find them fascinating and I kinda wish more people did foolish personas in the SCA.   (I blame Alan Gordon's jester mysteries for this).  Anyways, I found this manuscript today, and I really want to find someone to put in this outfit.

When a campus camera crew stops you and asks if they "Can interview you about the flu epidemic, since you obviously have it...."

***HEAD-DESK, HEAD-DESK, HEAD-DESK***

No, kids, this is not what the flu looks like.  This is what violent allergies look like.  The flu...well, the last time I had the flu, I would have put down my dog if it looked that ill.

Blargh....

So my sinuses are officially kicking my ass.  I actually went home from work a little early yesterday because all the nose-blowing, combined with a lack of caffiene, triggered a migraine (I know, because it was a stabbity feeling behind my right eye where my migraines always start.  Sinus headaches feel a lot more like having a vice clamped around my upper nose).

I am still going back into the office today, because our office is a little bit screwed at the moment, thanks to Ice-a-palooza.  A big part of what we do this time of year is incoming freshman scholarship and fellowship application processing.  All applications are supposed to be in by February 1, and we make decisions by February 15th.  With the ice storm, we are a week behind on processing and reviewing applications, and we have a greater number of people calling in with sob stories about why they missed the deadline.  So we sort of need to be all hands on deck.  I will just take in happy drugs and kleenex with me, to try to control the symptoms.

Unrelatedly, [livejournal.com profile] silk_noir
the Arab cook book I mentioned is The Arab Table, by May S. Bsisu.  I really love it.

That I am not doing a medieval themed wedding.  Nope, not going to do it.  Just not princessy enough....

However, this right here is almost enough to make me change my mind.  Maybe I will make this for head-table at feast at some event....

2:00 PM:  Admitted I could not take the drainage/congestion/discomfort anymore and took a Loratadine.

2:17PM: Officially have that "swimming in a sea of cotton candy" in my head.  This does not bode well for my productivity for the rest of the day...

Ugh.....

So after doing some of the cleaning I had been neglecting last night, I was sitting here, working on stuff, and suddenly, the throat started hurting....the way it does when my allergies start acting up and draining my sinuses.  I so don't have time for this.  Its t-minus 12 days until my surgery, and I really don't want to have to do another round of uber-antibiotics in the next few days.  Constant nausea never makes me terribly productive.

Also, since my surgery is so minor, my doctor's office doesn't pre-qualify it with my insurance company, and I am kinda paranoid that we'll do the thing, and then they will come back and deny my coverage for some reason....I suppose I should call and talk to my dad and see about calling them myself.

So [livejournal.com profile] evil_fionn , [livejournal.com profile] snailstichr , Hans, and Nicolas and I went up the Clothier's Seminar in Cúm an Iolair this weekend.  There was so much fun had, it might seriously have been illegal.  We headed up Friday evening, and got in to JoeAngus and Phaedra's at about Midnight.  Then everyone but Hans ended up stitching on projects until about 2:30AM.

After sleeping for four hours, we got up and going to get Nic to site in time to teach in the first block of classes.  I took a course on Cotehardies that was...well....very much about taking three measurements and then doing bizzare things to them, and was pretty much lost on me.  After lunch, they did the walk through of history, which was really cool, especially [livejournal.com profile] evil_fionn 's Bathilde gown's debut.

After that, I took a class on fitted kirtles (which are also occasionally the same thing as Cotehardies or Gothic Fitted Dresses), and this method made so much more sense.  In fact, for the first time, the whole patterning aspect made complete and total sense.  I also took a class on German 15th Century Gowns, which are very similar to Burgundians.  In fact, I was so absorbed in the garb, I wasn't aware the was fighting at the site.  Seriously.  No clue.

I also got to see[livejournal.com profile] wombatgirl  again (I am sorry we didn't get to visit more.  I was kind of out of it that whole first hour...) and got to meet [livejournal.com profile] silk_noir , who was so incredibly lovely, and awesome, and smart.  I really look forward to getting to know her better.

After the event, we wandered off and had dinner, and ended up kind of skipping the after revel.  However, we did discover what essentially amounts to fizzy Italian Boone's Farm.   We all ended up crashing out at about midnight.

This morning, we got up and headed out at around 10.  After a fantastic lunch at Olive Garden, we hit Michaels and the biggest JoAnn's Fabric I have ever seen.  Where we found 60" wide decorator silks on sale for $4.50/yd.  Yes, I did just type that number right.  So I got 6 yards of lilac purple (which is not a color I could have imagined, but [livejournal.com profile] evil_fionn , [livejournal.com profile] snailstichr , and Nicolas all did an "Oh, girlfriend" when Nic had me hold it up).  I kind of wish, in hindsight, that I had bought about another 6 yards in another color, the sale was that good.  Maybe the Tulsa JoAnns will have some when I get home this coming weekend.

So what do I plan to do with the crazy gorgeous silk I bought.  Well, we have a very, very cool, high persona William Marshall themed event coming up in May, and I plan to have appropriate Garb.  Gorgeous, gorgeous appropriate garb.  I really am looking foward to it, and for reference, its on the Calon/Midrealm border, so [livejournal.com profile] campagnella  and  [Bad username or unknown identity: ][personal profile] you should both come.

I got stopped for expired tag, which it wasn't (someone stole my tag sticker), and while we were at it, I had misread the new insurance card activation date as 02/01/09 (it was 02/10/09), so the officer (henceforth refered to as deputy d*ck) felt the need to write me a ticket for no current insurance.  So I had to go find an All-State office, to get a copy of my insurance, to take to the municipal town court house, to get the ticket voided, go to the tag agency, to be told that one of my parents had to be with me (car is in their names), went to get my mother, back to the tag agency, and then home to put the whole new tag (Oklahoma is switching tag styles, and rather than just a sticker, they gave me a whole new tag) on my car so I would be back to current and legal (since Dept. D*ck felt the need to point out he could still write me a ticket for expired tag, since I didn't HAVE the sticker with me).  Essentially, two hours of my life I won't get back.

U of A has closed.  I actually brought enough work home with me to get some hours in, so that's not a big deal.  I obviously still have power, and thus internet and tv and a heating blanket and tasty warm things to eat.  So at this point, I am going to snuggle back into bed for a nice winter's nap, then get up, do a little more house cleaning, and maybe some more homework.

Hasn't started to materialize in a meaningful way yet, but I am operating under the theory of " if you wash your car it rains", and while at Wal-mart (which was not yet a zoo), I bought some inexpensive tap-lights and a small flashlight.  Other than that, I have chips, pb&j fixings, pepperoni rolls, summer sausage, and apple sauce.  I should be just fine.

My big question is whether to post-pone the panel discussion tonight on professional school admissions.  I think I will give the panelists the option and see what they say.

**UPDATE**

5 out of 5 panelists were like "We'll come if we really need to, but we'd just as soon postpone."  So no panel tonight.

***UPDATE v2.0***

So it doesn't look bad outside....but I came very near to butt planting on the ice-covered grass walking from the bus stop.

5.  I had a great time this weekend at Mongols on Campaign.  http://www.facebook.com/photos.php?id=9609634#/photo.php?pid=38889570&id=9609634  The dress is pulled a little askew, but I really like how it came out.  And [livejournal.com profile] evil_fionn has a wicked ability to sense cheap fantastic fabric.

4.  I didn't get nearly as much done on my apartment as planned, but I did finish the prototype of the Doe's Grace medallions I have been working on, and I really liked how it came out.

3.  There is local politic going on.  I plan to pretty much keep my head down for the forseeable future.

2.  Turnip Gratin- 1lb turnips, peeled and sliced medium thick slices.  1/2 stick butted and 1 tbl garlic, melted and slightly sauteed.  1/2 cup parmesan.  Layer half the turnips on the bottom of a glass baking pan.  Sprinkle with half the cheese, salt and pepper to taste, and drizzle with half the butter and garlic.  Add second layer of turnips, repeat the topping.   Bake at 350 for 35-40 minutes until fork tender.

1.  Pears in Poma-berry Glaze.  Cut 4 pears in half, core and remove the stems.  Place in a pie pan peel side down.  In a small sautee pan, take 1 cup of pama liquor or pomagrante juice, 1/4 cup sugar, and 1/2 cup raspberry and blackberry mix, and reduce of medium-low heat for 10 minutes.  Pour over the pears, and bake at 350 for 20 minutes.

and I am naming him Herbert.  My ENT guy (the fancy name for his specialty makes me think of birds, so for now, he's the ENT guy, and he was very encouraging.  My cyst is back down to small after the Amoxicilin from hell regimen, and is, according to Dr. F, textbook.  I even got to see pictures on the ultra-sound (free, since the new protocol is to have your own machine, and Dr. F is still learning to use his).  Also, my thyroid is "small, but very cleaning looking).  And there are no risk signs that Herbert is some kind of carcinoma, which is good.  I expect we will probably schedule the surgery for the second or third week in February.

I wonder if I get to keep Herbert in a jar, after its over.  I could bring him to class and populace and staff meetings for show and tell.

How I can have been on 1725mg of Amoxicilin a day for five days, and suddenly feel like I have an unrelated ear infection starting?  I seriously don't have time for this....

Hmm....

OK, I get that everyone thinks that Rob Blagojevich is a scum bag.  For that matter, I think Blagojevich is pretty much a scum bag.  But the Senate is wasting everyone's time blocking Roland Burris from being seated as the junior US Senator from Illinois.  Because like it or not, the Scumbag is still the suly elected and seat governor of Illinois, and it is long established doctrine that Congress has sceded power to appoint seats left open by death or resignation as the state see's fit, and in Illinois that is still by Gubernatorial appointment.  In fact, Powell v. McCormack, 395 US 486 (1969), says that a legally appointed representative or senator has to be seated.  So quit whining about a missing seal by whoever, seat the man, and get on to something important, like, I don't know, the economy, the war, health care, or the fact that Israel is swatting flies with sledgehammers again.  Because penny ante bullshit like this is NOT what I pay taxes for.

I have so not been productive so far today.  I need to organize the chaos that is my apartment (I brought home two large laundry hampers, a new blender, a bag of food from my parents, etc).  Stuff is pretty much all over the place, since that's where I put it when I got in last night.  So now, I can't really decide where to start cleaning from....maybe the TV area.  That makes a little bit of sense.

I also need to call the insurance agent of the girl who hit my car on Friday night.  I wasn't in the car at the time, and the damage is fairly minimal.  She was driving a Nissan Xterra and didn't see me parked across the street from her house.  Her tow hitch did a number on my front driver's side panel, which will need to be replaced.  Right now, my headlight is being held in place by a very judicious application of strapping tape.

Sigh...

So pretty much the only event I am absolutely committed to in 2009 at the moment is Calontir's cooks symposium.  I am even thinking about a class on sources for period or odd ingredients (geared towards newer cooks, letting them see/taste the odd and providing suggested sources).

Beyond that....meh?  I didn't put in an entry for Queen's prize because I didn't really know who to talk to about it locally (since I would probably do food, and the arts types I am closest to are not food-centric) and I didn't really have time to sit and work out ideads before hand.  There's technically still time, but...

I have met a couple people in Calontir outside of the local group, but I am not really comfortable travelling on my own in a kingdom that seems to rely so much more on crash space than camping necessarily.  So I really am not sure what else I am going to in kingdom.

Gulf Wars is also kind of a big question mark.  I was hoping the fiance and I might debut the pavillion, but a) its still not done and b) he's making rumbling that his Organic Chem II profs (lecture and lab) might load him with work over the break.  I am also not sure where we would camp without hurting people's feelings.  If I am going by myself, my car really, really doesn't have the capability to carry the pavillion poles.  I still have my wee modern tent, which would be fine, but there is still the question of where to camp.

With the pavillion, I am almost wondering if I should just sell it.  I've had it almost 4 years now, and we HAVE NEVER USED IT...which is sort of Peter's fault and sort of mine, but at this point, I feel like a nag when I bring it up.  Because the next camping event we would both be going to will maybe by Triumphe...if we bother this year...so...  Anymore, it just pisses me off.

I got new cookery books for my birthday (a month late, thanks sis).  That's about all I am excited about at this point.

So my fiance is the outgoing president of his Alpha Phi Omega Service Fraternity, and along with his incoming president, is attending the Fraternity's National Conference in Boston, which is being held at the Sheraton Convention Center, a Starwood Hotels Property.

Now, both Peter and Alicia have budgeted very very carefully to make this happen, so imagine their surprise upon check in to be told they had to put down a $50/day (over $200 total) incidental fee in case they "trash the room". No mention of this fee was made in any of the convention literature nor in any of the emails Peter received when booking the room made any mention of this fee. Additionally, while the fee will be refunded at the end of the week should the room be left in good condition, it won't be until after they get home. Charging this fee essentially wiped out Peter's food budget for the week (I am going first thing in the AM to put money in his bank to give him a cushion).

I understand that Hotels have to protect their property, but this could be done by a clause at booking (which requires a credit card anyways) that damage to the room will be charged to the card at check out. By forcing an unexpected fee on college student, most of whom are already on a tight budget, is ageist (funny, since Peter is a non-traditional student) and discriminatory.

So I am asking for you to let Starwood know how you feel about this policy. Send them an email, telling them you think this policy is unfair and unnecessary, and that in the future, you will not stay with their properties or utilize their convention facilities.

I appreciate you support on this.
